Evergreen Terrace - Josh

Evergreen Terrace put out a killer album this year, with an also cool album title of “Wolfbiker”. Guitarist Josh was kind enough to reply to my questions with some humorous reactions. Take a look below!
Way Too Loud: You’ve been around for a long time, long before many other bands in your scene have, what were things like before there were so many bands back in 2001, and even before then? Was it a select group of people and bands with a passion for doing something different?
Josh: I’m not really sure. When we first started we didn’t really know any other bands that were the same style as us. I remember when we used to go out of town to play shows and bands would either be totally cool with us or complete assholes, probably because they thought we were invading their scene. Ha. Or because we sucked.
WTL: How do you view what’s going on now with your scene? Does it seem like there’s lots of kids looking to “make it big” without being creative?
Josh: Yeah I do think there are a lot of bands that are just trying to make some quick cash. The shitty thing is that they’re doing it. Ha. But in the end those bands know nothing about punk rock and hardcore, they’re just posers and are going to jump on the next bandwagon as soon as it pulls up.
WTL: Do other people see you as having more credibility, since your first album came out back in 2001, before the interests of wider musical audiences changed?
Josh: No, not at all. People have no clue that we’ve been around that long and have been doing this since 1999. They think we’re just an Atreyu rip off.
WTL: How do you feel about bands coping your sound, or more specifically, the screamed verse/sung chorus?
Josh: I don’t really care, we weren’t the first and we won’t be the last. It’s just funny that those bands are all huge now, hahahaha.
WTL: Since you’ve been around for so long, and worked pretty hard touring, as well as having the clean sung choruses, some people feel that you should have more success. How do you feel about this? Was Eulogy Records perhaps not a big enough label to push you?
Josh: Wow, you are inside my brain. You would think that we would have a little more success, but we are where we are. Fun is always our main concern and we are still having a lot of fun. We outgrew Eulogy, that’s why we left.
WTL: Does it bother you to be labeled as “metalcore” by some?
Josh: No. I guess it’s better then anything with the word “emo” in it.
WTL: Is there any future left in the single-note breakdown? I’ve heard a few bands leave them behind recently for other types of mosh parts and crowd movers.
Josh: Hahaha. I have no idea what that is.
WTL: You’ve got a lot of book, movie and TV references, such as Fight Club and The Big Lebowski. How much time are you able to dedicate to books, TV and movies? Are there subtle references in “Wolfbiker?” Some of those song titles are hilarious.
Josh: I spend a lot of time reading and watching movies. Those are good pastimes. There are some references in Wolfbiker; Grandma’s Boy, Steppenwolf, Waking Life. I know there are a couple more but my brain is shit right now. Strung Out is watching a Slayer DVD right now and it’s cranked. Ha.
WTL: Do you get way too many requests for “Bloody Sunday?” The Black Dahlia Murder has the same problem with “Paint It Black.”
Josh: Haha. Yeah, we do.
WTL: You’ve got to tell me about this “Wolfbiker”. Sounds scary, like it could kick my ass, then rip me to pieces.
Josh: After it does that, it usually shits down your throat and pisses in your eyes.
WTL: Bands get asked too often about their band name. The Red Chord now lies about what their band name means, and The Black Dahlia Murder makes up band names. Have you told any funny lies about your band name?
Josh: Yeah, we told someone that the link between us and the Simpsons is that Jason (bass) did a few guest voices in season 8.
WTL: Do you have any guess to which state the Simpsons live in?
Josh: Mars.
