Demericous – Two (Poverty)

In this day and age with music that tries to continually move forward, sometimes we need to take a look back. Demericious seems to be on their natural progression of moving away from the 80’s thrash bands they hold close, but not by too much. This time around, it isn’t so much Slayer as it is Demericous trying out few other 80’s thrash bands, but being a bit more subtle this time around. Strangely, the same variant on the last album that didn’t sound like Slayer, which was Nate Olp’s almost black metal rasp has been deepened, and he adds a slight bit of a sing pitch to what’s mostly a scream. The end result sounds like Tom Araya on a full-force scream all the time.
For a band so based on thrash, there’s surprising amount of songs played at half-time or at mid-paced tempos, yet they still stay firmly in thrash territory without going into the world groove metal, but by the time you’ve reached the end of the album, you realize its double-edged sword. As fun as it is to hear a bunch of young lads who just came back from a year full of touring still full of piss and vinegar, they’re still working at finding their own voice. Considering how fun the last effort was and the progression they’ve made this time, I can’t help but feeling they’ve got a few albums to go before they fully nail it. Until then, you can still have fun watching Demiricous as you go through numerated album titles.
