Sigh – Hangman’s Hymn

I had high hopes for Sigh, as I’d hear they were high on the experimental side of black metal, and very good at it. Since I only knew what I’d heard, I was expecting something pretty far from what I got with “Hangman’s Hymn”.

The vocals are spouted off like an evil character explaining his plot in rhyming fashion like a black metal Beauty And The Beast musical. In the background is a lot of Cradle Of Filth like black metal, perhaps with a bit more speedily picked chords, but what’s noticeable are the keyboards imitating just about every orchestral instrument you can think of from horns to strings, along with choirs and singing. The keyboards don’t quite create the desired effect, as instead of sounding pretty close to the real thing, you get the soundtrack to a Super Nintendo Castlevania game. The overall effect is a cheesy cartoon version of Cradle Of Filth, and yes, we already know that you think Cradle Of Filth dresses like a cheesy cartoon. Whatever. One of the band members from Chthonic has a spiked face mask, so?

Every now and then a heavy Japanese band will do something so corny that you wonder if the message they’re conveying perhaps got lost in translation. Maybe that, along with a low budget to record, preventing the use of realistic sounding instruments held back Sigh from conveying the message they were trying to send with “Hangman’s Hymn”.
