Be’ Lakor – The Frail Tide

My first self-released album! I usually steer clear of self-releases and demos to be honest. My typical mentality is that the large majority of unsigned bands are unsigned for lots of good reasons, although some do slip through the cracks.

What Be’Lakor have on tap from “The Frail Tide” can easily be described as melodic death metal/doom. The songs are driven heavily by gruff vocals, as well as the harmonies and melodies pouring off the guitars that borrow heavily from folk melodies, as well as a hint of Iron Maiden. There’s also quite a few breaks in the action with pianos and keyboards.

With the songs as long as they are, I’d figure that Be’Lakor would be holed up in taking everything slow, or repeating a lot of portions, but “The Frail Tide” has mostly the opposite of what you’d expect a melodic death metal/doom band to do. Very few portions of the songs repeat, so there’s not much resembling a verse or chorus. At the same time, they achieve something very difficult in songs that lack that sort of verse/chorus structure, which is to really build songs up, and in that respect the long songs really work to their advantage. Some tracks start off as slow somber piano passages, perhaps and acoustic guitar or clean toned guitar, then add, speed up, and morph from there until the pace actually becomes quite quick, with double bass pulses and all. Before you know it, you’re traveling through quick folky/melodic death metal territory before things start winding down for the ending.

Finally, a band with an interesting take on melodic death metal, and a new look on doom/death.
