Darkest Hour – Deliver Us

I don’t get a chance to listen to a whole lot of melodic death metal or melodic metalcore anymore. I had enough sub-standard clone bands thrown at me in 2004 and 2005 that I’d much rather leave it to the experts than listen to some kids fail at attempting to rip off that old trend.
In my opinion, Darkest Hour was the best At The Gates influenced band (although the guys in The Black Dahlia Murder would like you to believe otherwise). The band has moved from having a heavy At The Gates influence shown in the long epic songs of “Hidden Hands Of A Sadist Nation”, to the more 80’s influenced melodies, “Undoing Ruin”.
To be honest, “Deliver Us” seems like a direct continuation of “Undoing Ruin”. All the differences between albums before “Undoing Ruin” are still reflected here, such as a few clean vocal passages, and guitarist Kris Norris playing most of the guitar solos (as opposed to playing no guitar solos before). There’s no need to worry about the clean vocals, as John Henry uses them sparingly for only a few songs. His singing isn’t an “emo” style wine. You can certainly tell he’s not a singer by any means, but he stays on key which to me is the most important part.
“Deliver Us” isn’t really an “intense” album in my personal sense, as the band aren’t attempting to play to the limit of how fast they can go, or to the ultimate limit of their skills, so in this case the overall feel is actually kind of relaxed.
I usually end up with one “summer album” every year. The kind of album that comes out usually just before summer starts. The kind of album that’s a whole cohesive unit, that comes off great played as a whole. The kind of album that I end up playing in my car on every road trip. “Undoing Ruin” was that album in 2005, “The Price Of Existence” was that album in 2006, and in 2007, I actually have a toss up between “Deliver Us” and “Genesis” by Job For A Cowboy.
