The Minor Times – Summer Of Wolves

The Minor Times fits in with same type of heavy hardcore sounding bands such as Engineer, Intronaut, Swarm Of The Lotus, perhaps early Mastodon. The sound they present contains harsh bludgeoning guitars that try and beat the listener to death with a certain portion of simplicity. The coarse-as-salt vocals are yelled as if singer was a drill sergeant, pounding his orders eye-to-eye at your face. There are breaks in the action, sometimes for some higher shrieking guitars to stab at your eardrums, or slower moments of fuzzy atmosphere that sometimes comes close to stretching over to Metalgaze territory. It makes sense that The Minor Times would have an upcoming split 7″ with Rosetta for those lazier moments.
One thing that is guaranteed is that there are absolutely no blatant breakdowns. They might just be hidden within the music, but it can be difficult to discern what parts are made for the audience to move or not when the songs are presented in a listening format at home rather than live. While this means that while “Summer Of Wolves” could, and is appealing to many in the conventional metalcore crowd, conventional metalcore this is not.
The most standout track on the “Summer Of Wolves” is the 7th track, “This Is The Blues”, due to the spacey reverb echoes coupled with the 70’s styled organ playing on the second half of the song. A little further into the song, you can hear the gang singing “na na-na-na-na”. It’s an 8 minute long song, longer than most of the other 3 minute treks. It’s the sort of thing that could’ve made it into some movie soundtrack or TV show from decades ago. I found myself wishing they could’ve made more use of those sounds for the rest of the album.
As wonderful as I’ve made it all sound, and how well the album has been executed, you’ve heard it all done before, and done better. Engineer is heavier and more fun, Intronaut builds a better atmosphere, Mastodon set a signature sound in their early days, and Swarm Of the Lotus was a wonderfully strange mixture (before they broke up).
