I Hate Sally – Dee Prescott

Things with I Hate Sally seem to be picking up quickly. Hearing the noisy chaos on their MySpace page got me hooked right from the moment I heard them. I hadn’t heard of them until recently, but when I did, I had heard lots of good things from different places. I was fortunate to talk with singer Dee Prescott while I Hate Sally was touring with From Autumn To Ashes.
Way Too Loud: Can you tell me about your previous works before “Don’t Worry Lady” and how you’ve evolved since then? It seems you don’t want to play your older material.
Dee Prescott: I think every band goes through the kind of stuff of finalizing the lineup. When I first joined the band, it was something different than it is now. The lineup became more connected, because as a 4-piece it’s easier to get stuff done.
WTL: What’s the writing process like?
Dee: I don’t think we’re really big on trying to force out a song. With the writing process, someone comes up with something and we all work around it, and everyone throws their 2 cents in. We’re really connected, and good friends, so it just kind of comes out of working.
WTL: You’ve got some U.S. support now, since “Don’t Worry Lady” is distributed in the U.S.
Dee: It just came out in the U.S. 2 weeks ago on a label called Density, which is an imprint of Vagrant Records. We just got back from 7 weeks in the states.
WTL: So you’re going to do a lot more U.S. touring?
Dee: Yeah, there’s so much more over there. The drives are so much shorter, and there’s more “scenes” for certain genres of music. I think more or less in Canada kids are coming out to shows just because there’s a show, but in the U.S., and bigger cities in Canada too, like Toronto, you can have so many sub-genres and scenes.
WTL: What do you do to keep yourself entertained on the road?
Dee: I sleep a lot! As soon as the van starts rolling, I’m out! When we get to cities, I like walking around and seeing what’s going on, which is interesting. That’s what I do. Sometimes we get a 2×4 and a bunch of tennis balls and hit ‘em against the wall!
WTL: Does anyone get a chance to read something on the road?
Dee: Mark (McGee, drums) reads a lot in the van. He’ll read just about anything, just to be reading. I can’t read in the van myself, because of the motion, it’s just too much. Even a magazine with bigger print, I can’t do it. If I was to read a lot in the van, I would definitely barf my guts out. Or watching a DVD on a laptop, that makes me kind of sick too…
WTL: Are there any Canadian bands you’d like to tour with?
Dee: The End is on this tour, and they’re an amazing band. We’ve done some dates with Cancer Bats in January. It’s really cool because there’s so many Canadian bands right now that are so awesome and doing their thing. I think that 10 or 20 years ago there wasn’t the same underground scene. It was there, just not as popular. I wanna tour with The Hip!
WTL: Any Quebec bands?
Dee: GFK! We’ve been friends with them for the past 5 years. I think it’s short for Government Fury Kills, but I don’t think they ever bill themselves as that. They’re from Quebec city, and they’re amazing dudes. They’re like metal hardcore-ish style stuff, but it’s not generic. It’s got a “touch” to it. A lot of the lyrics are political. Jesse the singer sings in English, French and Spanish.
WTL: It’s been suggested that Quebec has a better metal scene, while Ontario has a better hardcore scene ,and certainly from what I’ve seen in passing, there seems to be a lot more hardcore in Ontario.
Dee: I don’t really pay attention to genres, or what’s going on. A lot of times we get billed as a metal band or a hardcore band, but I think we’re more like a punk band. Quebec does have a lot of metal, so it looks like your right about that one!
WTL: What’s the story behind the band name?
Dee: A guy who’s not even in the band named the band. It’s connected to Sally Jesse Raphael. It works! There’s so many bands with these weird names that don’t make any sense, we decided it would be cool to have a silly name.
WTL: How would you describe yourself to someone who hasn’t heard anything close to what you play?
Dee: I guess for someone who hasn’t seen us, at heart, we’re a punk band. So if someone’s into punk rock bands that have heart, that’s what they’ll get from us!
